Sketches and Star Trek
I think it is safe to say that I'm into Star Trek at this point. I had a passing familiarity with it for most of my life, and I knew about a lot of the characters. I had seen a few of the movies and a number of episodes of The Next Generation, but it didn't really feel like I was 'into it' the way that other people were.
While recovering from a flu-like illness last summer, I started watching Star Trek Strange New Worlds. It was the first time I'd really tried to watch a Star Trek series on my own, and I really liked it. Previous attempts maybe felt a little too forced, but this time it started to stick. I started thinking about how much I liked the crew and that the episodes were trying a lot of different things. My favorite episode was the one where they got stuck in the storybook that the doctor is reading his daughter with a terminal illness. I finally started to feel like I was 'getting it' when it came to Star Trek.
Since then, I've watched the entire run of Star Trek Voyager over the course of a few months last year. This show was really different, but I liked it even more. There are for sure some episodes that don't quite work, but it is a great work of serialization. Episode to episode not much changes, but the characters are well written and they tackle some heavy topics. My favorite episodes were the Tuvok and Neelix episodes. The characters are like oil and water, but the actors have such great chemistry.
Sometimes during the episodes I'd draw some of the characters, and I now have a bunch of sketchbook pages filled with the Voyager crew. Its nice to know that they are hanging around in there.
That's all to say that I'm starting to watch Deep Space Nine, and I drew my first DS9 crew member: Odo. I'll try to post more as I draw them and add in some of the Voyager crew as well.
